Earth has 9 planetary boundaries, & we’ve breached 6. Climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, and pollution are all interconnected, fueling a crisis that won’t stop even if emissions ended today. This chain reaction is unfolding - but understanding it gives us a chance to act before more thresholds collapse.
Many experience a 'wake-up call' about the climate crisis; I had two. In 2019, I witnessed Thailand’s Ko Phi Phi marred by floating trash and plastic. In 2021, a family trip to New Delhi, Amritsar, and Jaipur exposed me to overwhelming poverty and pollution.
The filth, pollution and destruction of the natural world I have seen in our ecosystems is unacceptable.
I am made even more angry everyday by the lack of action and attention this crisis is getting. Corruption, greed, colonisation of the natural world, lack of empathy have all lead us here.
Was I sheltered, oblivious, or complacent before? Perhaps. But it’s never too late to ignite positive change for people, the planet, and ourselves. Category Is is here to educate and inspire you.
Climate change is humanity’s greatest battle, exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure and leadership. As a conscious species, we have the power to reshape our world, yet we are on a path to sacrifice our right to nutritious food, clean water, and toxic air, compromising our safety, freedom, and quality of life.
Abandoning nature for a cyberpunk, industrialised Earth would be disastrous, with failing food chains, deforestation, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, energy deficiencies, overpopulation, and increasing illness, toxic air and poisonous water.
Developed countries are primarily responsible, but it’s the least developed that increasingly suffer from climate change.
We must act now to fix this!
Whilst this small, independently run blog is not going to save the climate, I hope that the academic articles I have written educate, inspire and encourage you to engage in this modern call to arms against ourselves.
We could all work our entire lives and still not live to see half of what is required to make humanity and society truly sustainable, however do not ever let that discourage you. Humanity's greatest triumphs were never successfully implemented in a single life time. It's a movement.
Every decision counts. Every day counts. Every action & every word counts. So use it all well.
Educate yourself, accept that life is going to become more and more challenging the longer you delay your role. Rise to the occasion.
Please reach us if you cannot find an answer to your question :)
Category Is was created to provide access to academic articles on key topics within the climate crisis, all designed to be easily readable and answer the primary questions that you would need to truly understand the material.
Operational Carbon is the impact a building or company emits whilst operating (i.e. a restaurant open during the day, deliveries, waste management etc), whilst Embodied Carbon refers to all impact created before and after operations (i.e. construction of the building, the oven, the destruction of the restaurant, materials for the interior etc).
When your actions contradict your thoughts, ethics, beliefs and attitudes. I.e. I believe the meat industry is cruel & unnecessary, but I just cannot stop eating meat, even though I do feel guilty about it.
Closing the action gap is exactly what it sounds like; trying to ensure full commitment to intentions, i.e. actually doing what you say you will do/what you want to do.
Often not met because of cognitive biases, self control problems, lack of motivation, or other psychological and contextual factors.
